As lovers of the 1970 Datsun “Z” cars will attest, finding original, unmolested cars is just about impossible. These cars were, in most cases, daily driver, and began to rust almost immediately. By the time these cars got to their 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th owners, they also had the luxury of being beaten on and modified. In short, these cars were used and used hard. That’s why it gives us great pleasure to roll out the cleanest, original 1978 Datsun 280Z we’ve seen in years.
This one owner car from California is so clean, you almost need to rub your eyes and ask yourself if you are seeing things. With a little more than 79,000 original miles showing on the Odometer, this is NOT an ultra-low miles car, but it was a car that lived a charmed life. The original California owner of this car drove it steadily until 1985, put it away in his garage, and the car never saw the light of day for another 22 years! The original California plate is still with the car, and stands as a testament to the favorable climate enjoyed by the residents of Sunnyvale! It also appears that during the seven year stretch this 280Z was on the road, it was garaged daily. The interior is so nice that there’s no way this car sat in the sun day after day. As we said, this car has lived a charmed life! Documentation wise, if you are a Z collector, it doesn’t get any better than this.
Present are the following: ORIGINAL Window Sticker; Original EPA Fuel Economy Sticker; Original dealer paperwork (price out the door was $8,916.00 minus a $2,200.00 trade credit on a 1973 Chevrolet Camaro); original California registration; last California registration; Retail Installment Contract for the financing of the car; original insurance card; original Owner’s Manual; original Warranty Service Booklet, and; original 1978 Sales Brochure. This has to be the best documented 1970’s Z we’ve ever seen!
As evidenced by the original window sticker, this 280Z came equipped standard with: Flow-Through Ventilation; Heater/Defroster; Variable Speed Windshield Wipers; Electric Windshield Washer; Courtesy Light; Padded Sun Visors & Dash, and; Glove Box. Accessories installed by the manufacturer included: 5 Speed Transmission; 2753 CC Overhead Cam Fuel Injected 6 Cylinder engine; 4 Wheel Independent Suspension; Rack & Pinion Steering; Power Assist Brakes; Reclining Front Bucket Seats; Am/Fm Stereo with Power Antennae; 195/70HR14 Steel Radial Tires; Space Saver Spare Tire; Tinted Glass-All Windows; Electric Rear Defroster; Full Cut-Pile Carpeting; Mag Type Full Wheel Covers; Console with Armrest; Tachometer, and; Quartz Clock.
Dealer installed options included: Air Conditioning; Sym-Tech (not a clue what that is!), and; Side Moldings. This was a fully loaded 280Z! Finished in Copper (301) with a matching Copper & Black interior, this car virtually screams: “it’s the 1970s!”.
When the car was taken out of storage, a knowledgeable mechanic got his hands on the car and went through it. The original gas tank was removed, boiled, sealed & replaced. The following were replaced: ECU; Injectors; Spark Plugs; Plug Wires; Coil, and; Clutch. New tires were installed as well.
Our shop just took a professional polisher to the car and the results are spectacular! There is not a speck of rust to be found anywhere on this car. There has never been any collision damage, any panel replacements and NO RUST. The original paint, now polished and waxed, looks incredible! All of the original chrome is in excellent condition, as are the original lenses and emblems. All four original factory wheel covers are present, and in perfect condition, with no damage to be found.
When we first opened the hood, we are astounded by the engine compartment … the inner fender wells looks like they just rolled off the assembly line last month! The engine in my 2007 Durango, driven through an Ohio winter, doesn’t look this nice.
The original interior in this car is equally incredible. The original seats are PERFECT. The original headliner is PERFECT. The original carpeting is a little faded, but PERFECT. The dashboard, instrument cluster, console and controls are incredibly nice, with no fading of the black plastic vinyl. The only flaw in the interior is the dash pad, which has a single crack down the center. It’s still a very nice dash pad! All instrumentation and controls work flawlessly.
The Z starts up at the turn of the key, and is a joy to drive. It’s the 70s all over again! Let’s sum it all up: flawless, rust free original body; original drive-train; near perfect original interior; impeccable documentation; loaded 1978 Datsun 280Z, sure to increase in value over time, if properly maintained, while being enjoyed. What can you buy in today’s market for less than $15K that has all of these factors present? Not much! Jump on this one, as it won’t last!
