There’s just something about a BMW that conveys the perfect combination of aggressive performance and excellent driving dynamics. And this 2000 E63/4 M Roadster, dressed in a great looking coat of original Dakar Yellow, puts a fresh twist on a traditional favorite. Looking more akin to classic 60s muscle car hue than modern BMW fodder, this Z3s unique urethane has been meticulously pampered and protected by three owners since it rolled out of BMWs Spartanburg, South Carolina assembly plant. Today, with a clean CarFax that displays nothing more than a dogged dedication to excellent maintenance, this awesome M roadster is one of the nicest low mileage sports cars on the planet!
While the base Z3 roadster was more exciting than most BMW offerings of the time, it was still rather conservatively designed to appeal to a wide range of buyers. So BMW knew that a more dramatic appearance would be needed when they dusted off their legendary M badge; and according, the M Roadster you see here is equipped with a host of visual upgrades that, while significant, flow extremely well with its already impressive design theme. At the front of the car, a deeper front valence swaps standard Z3 fog lights for wider air intakes which help cool the cars big brakes. Above those intakes, traditional chrome BMW ‘kidney grilles’ hang between a pristine BMW propeller emblem and M specific free form, chrome trimmed halogen headlights. Behind those headlights, a creased hood flows toward pristine factory glass which is flanked by M specific power side mirrors and capped by either an optional body-matched hardtop or a black fabric soft top that folds into an M specific boot. Below those tops, sculpted M specific rocker sills complement M specific side gills; and wider rear fenders combine with offset rear wheels to give the car and aggressive, planted look. And at the back of the car, factory fresh tail lights frame a second BMW propeller emblem and a third chrome M badge above a re-styled rear bumper which incorporates pristine stainless exhaust tips into an M specific rear air diffuser.
Fortunately for red-blooded car guys everywhere, one pull of this roadsters hood latch is all it takes to throw the ‘all business’ subtlety of this car’s sleek exterior components right out the driver’s window. Perfectly wedged between the Dakar Yellow fenders is BMWs 3.2 liter S52 inline six cylinder engine which utilizes a cast iron block, a free flowing intake, a ported and polished aluminum cylinder head, heavy duty valve springs, finely balanced camshafts and reduced mass hardware to crank out 240 horsepower and 259 lb./ft. of torque. But wait, there’s more: at the top of that motor, you’ll find a Dinan Stage II supercharger kit which adds a cool 100 horsepower and an impressive 48 lb./ft. of torque to dial this smooth BMW six cylinders thrill factor from scary, right up to insane! Designed as a high-revving engine which utilizes a wide power band to create big horsepower with smooth driving characteristics, the S52 3.2 is widely regarded as one of the best BMW powertrains ever created. It features a host of race proven technology which seamlessly complements traditional BMW silk and smoothness to create a well-mannered roadster with excellent track capability. And based on appearance, the engine compartment in this M Roadster has been meticulously maintained with everything from the “BMW MPower” branded engine cover to the fresh hoses and spotless battery terminals showing no signs of heat damage or any weathering at all.
Naturally, a powerhouse like this car’s hot S52 needs a whole lot of top notch hardware to back it up. And accordingly, all M Roadsters were equipped with durable ZF Type C manual transmissions which feel good and perform great. That slick-shifting 5-speed sends power from a Dinan Stage II clutch to a standard limited slip differential which combines hardy 3.23 gears with M specific suspension geometry to create confident launches and quick acceleration. And the car’s excellent weight distribution combines with a Nurburgring worthy Macpherson strut front and semi trailing arm rear chassis, factory traction control, Dinan Stage III modifications, an M specific a wider track, an M specific ride height, and M specific springs and shocks to turn this already serious performer into a curve carving track monster. Stops are supplied by 12.4 inch front and 12.3 inch rear ventilated discs that are clamped by large black calipers via a standard BMW anti-lock brake system. Exhaust is handled by an aggressive sounding Dinan free flowing system which optimizes the superchargers power numbers. And the final piece of the performance upgrade package is a set of positively gorgeous 17 inch M branded RoadStar alloy wheels which wear 225/45 front and 245/40 rear Michelin Pilot Sport performance radials.
Inside this slick BMW, it’s all about a symbiotic relationship between cutting edge European performance and traditional ‘old world’ luxury. At the center of the car, pleated leather buckets, which show hardly any wear at all, perfectly complement great looking stitched leather covers which wrap tightly around the cars console and sculpted armrests. Inside that console, chrome trimmed VDO gauges allow you to keep an extra close watch on the cars vitals, and an aftermarket Alpine cassette player communicates with a trunk mounted Alpine CD changer to provide the soundtrack for your weekend escape. Between the seats, a slick “M” branded shifter sits below a large, rear mounted Harmon Kardon speaker that hides under a factory equipped wind screen. And behind the seats, leather wrapped roll over bars convey a since of style and comfort that isn’t found in most drop tops. At the bottom of the cockpit, like-new black carpet is protected by color-keyed M branded floor mats and chrome M specific sill plates. And at the back of the cockpit, a fresh and exceptionally roomy trunk is big enough to accommodate luggage for two. In front of the driver, an M specific three spoke steering wheel spins around M specific chrome rimmed and red needled gauges. And throughout the interior, you’ll find the usual assortment of luxury appointments and convenience features including cruise control, power seats, power accessories, an electrochromatic rearview mirror and both front and side airbags.
The sale of this low mileage BMW includes two original window stickers, the cars original dealer paperwork, the cars original owner’s manual and warranty booklets, receipts and paperwork for the Dinan components, a chrome Dinan emblem, receipts and manuals for the Alpine sound system, random service receipts, and a clean CarFax.
Highly civilized and extremely potent, this BMW M Roadster is a no-compromises exercise in high-end German performance. Still luxurious where it matters, with serious performance upgrades underneath, it will surprise almost any exotic car on the road without degrading ride quality or driver comfort. Reliable, streetable and poised to become a future classic, this awesome yellow BMW truly is the ultimate driving machine.
