We love 3000GT’s here, and we get our share of gorgeous ones in now and again. This one’s a mind blower, though; a bright Caracas Red over tan leather VR4 Spyder! There are only 10,900 miles on the clock, there are NO issues with the car anywhere, and it’s 100% factory original and unmodified down to the tires!

These cars are so rare many people don’t even know they exist. Converted by the open top experts at ASC, these Spyders were the first retractable hardtop cars offered to the American public since the 1959 Ford Sunliner! They were offered for sale in 1995 and 1996 only, with a production total of just over 800, with 346 built in 1996 like this one. A couple of us here remember drooling on the cars at the Detroit and Cleveland auto shows before recoiling in horror at the near $70,000 sticker price! The retractable roof was one of the coolest things we’d ever seen but we thought you’d have to be crazy to pay a $20,000+ premium over the hardtop!

Doing some research I found out where a lot of the money went; this was obviously no Sawzall job! ASC modified every exterior panel on the car other than the hood for additional structural rigidity and packaging. Not only did the doors require additional bracing they also got extra relays for the ‘express down’ feature when the top lowers. The front fenders are unique due to reinforcement of the body. The taillights were modified, the windshield header is modified and obviously the roof is gone, but there are a hundred small details from the relocation of seatback releases to a unique rear view mirror that needed replacement! Components like the CD changer, ABS module and ECU have new brackets or locations, and the radio’s amp was retuned to provide additional bass. Retuned spring and shock rates soften the ride while a new brake proportioning valve is adjusted for the additional weight and its distribution. Bumper and side skirts, moldings and emblems are reworked or replaced. The depth of the Spyder’s changes is thorough, comprehensive and completely in line with Mitsubishi’s philosophy that the 3000GT would be a world class touring car, top up or down!

This car is truly beautiful. Obviously it was spared all winters as a quick check of the body, undercarriage and interior all show NO evidence of abuse or rust. There shouldn’t be, the car averaged 900 miles a year from new! That’s the original exhaust from front to back, the original brakes, wheels and Michelin tires at all four corners and the dead stock, powerful and smooth motor up front! The A/C blows ice cold and the heater works great, just like everything else on the car. There’s a ton of power from the 320hp twin turbo mill up front and the transmission’s flawless!

The exterior is a beautiful Caracas Red, just as a hot drop top should be! The body of the car is shiny, dent-free and beautiful. All four factory chrome wheels are in excellent shape, the ground effects and bumpers are excellent with no cracking, splitting or chips and the lights and lenses are excellent with no clouding or discoloration. The car is a true head turner at any speed, top up or down!

The interior is in pristine condition. The seats are gorgeous with scar-free supple leather covers, the dash and center console are mark free and the carpet is in excellent shape. There’s a lot of stuff going on in here, too, from climate control to a wild large screen cassette radio (with in-trunk CD changer) to the Spyder-specific top and trunk switches to basic items like power windows, locks and mirrors, cruise, tilt, steering wheel radio controls and full gauges. The six-way power seat keeps you comfortable for quick blasts of speed in turns as well as road trips. Breathe deeply and smell nothing but clean leather and fresh air; this was a non smoking hot rod with a lighter that’s never done its job!

This car’s ready to go! Obviously, you’ll want to treat this one with the same care that’s been shown for the last thirteen years, but rest assured it’s ready at a moment’s notice to do your bidding. One of 346, 10,900 original miles and one of the coolest convertibles on the planet, this car was a star from day one. Far from an immobile museum piece, this car’s condition nonetheless warrants serious attention from collectors!
