Rosso Corsa over natural leather, Spyder targa roof. Does a car need more introduction than that? You know immediately we’re talking about a Ferrari, and in this case a final year 308 GTSi quattrovalvole. Resplendent in its fresh coat of glowing red paint, recently serviced, showing only 21,600 actual miles and running beautifully this prancing horse is ready for years of enjoyment!

Maintenance first – the clutch, pressure plate, transmission seals, spark plugs, timing belts and engine belts were replaced 4000 miles ago. Anyone who knows the first thing about these cars knows to check for these items! The original belts are still in the trunk, as well.

Sight down the straight and very, very red body to find no waves, dents or other blemishes. We bought the car in excellent shape but the paint had seen better days – the car is twenty four years old, after all, and Ferrari’s paint doesn’t hold up as well as you’d like. As it was in such excellent shape a full teardown wasn’t advised, so our team smoothed out the couple parking lot dings and random minor scratches, cut into the faded paint and laid down the fresh red. The result is much better than a factory job that looks like it’s lit from beneath! Complimenting the new finish are all four original wheels refinished by Motomotion. Again, nothing major was wrong but a couple of minor curb marks and years worth of fading didn’t do the paint justice – we had to refinish them. Nearly new Kumho Ecsta 712 tires in the correct 205/55 front and 225/50/ZR16 rear sizes ride on those beautifully restored wheels. Lenses in the front bumper, the fenders and the tail panel are all original and in excellent shape. Both bumpers are excellent with zero damage and in their original bright black condition. The glass is all original, clean and clear. The black Spyder top is in excellent shape without warpage or tearing.

Take a quick glance underneath and note the clean chassis with no damage and clean panels. The steering is tight and the brakes are spot on. Pop the front hatch to find 100% original components down the original, never used Pirelli Cintruato P7 on the original spare. Clean and without fault – it’s what you’re looking for.

Open the rear hatch and find the trunk zip-close cover intact over the clean luggage compartment. The original jack is in here in its original pouch, as well. Forward of the compartment is the heart of the beast – the three litre, fuel injected four cam V8 producing 235 horsepower at a stratospheric 7000rpm. The Quattrovalvole models are instantly recognizable thanks to their red intake manifolds as well as their newfound power. You’re looking at (other than maintenance) an untouched, unmolested engine bay that’s correct and as Maranello intended. You don’t want to buy a car that’s rigged up or had its expensive systems bypassed!

Set down low in the close quarter interior and take in this driver’s special. Large, easy to read gauges are front and center, there’s a Momo wheel in your hands and a tall gated shifter to your right. Sure, the rest of the switchgear looks like it was placed in a box, dumped into the interior and installed where it landed, but that’s one of the quirks of owning a sports car! The dash pad is excellent with no shrinkage or warping, the passenger seat is perfect and the driver seat shows only normal wear for a 308. The door panels and carpeting are in great shape and are all original. The car’s one deviation from stock is a Kenwood CD player in the dash replacing the manual tuning cassette that came in the car from new. The aforementioned switches and controls all have a high quality feel to them as you’d expect to find in a hand built car. Even the latches for the front and rear compartments, tucked away in the driver’s door jamb, are resplendent in chrome with the company logo on them – those are the special touches in hidden places which separate the best from the rest.

Pull a Carfax and find out the car was originally kept in Europe as new, finding its way to California a few years later. The full gamut of federalization procedures took place, satisfying the super strict smog nazis in the Golden State. The car even passed Ohio’s IM240-type test in June of this year – a good tune up does wonders for these cars! While all structural changes such as the bumpers and door beams are no US spec, the motor retains its elevated compression and higher lift cams – this car’s a runner!
There’s a reason the cavallino rampante commands such strong feelings from its owners and admirers – everyone from the kid bagging groceries to the Sultan of Brunei knows one when he sees one. Fantastic to drive, fascinating to sit and stare at, fabulous to own and downright affordable, this may be the perfect enthusiasts’ car!
